Notices: N.I.S.S.C.

This is the collection of regatta notices for the 2021 N.I. Secondary School Championships.

Cancelled

In early March Rowing NZ sought feedback from secondary schools on their attendance at a proposed/postponed 2021 Aon North Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships (NISS) held on 21-23 April 2021, and 2021 Meridian South Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships (SISS) held on either 9-11 April, or 16-18 April.

We have received insufficient interest from Schools to deem each regatta viable. As a result, Rowing NZ, Karapiro Rowing and South Island have had to make the tough decision to not proceed with the proposed regattas, and the 2021 Aon NISS and Meridian SISS events are now officially cancelled.

Rowing NZ remain grateful to Karapiro Rowing and South Island Rowing for undertaking a substantial amount of work in hosting a possible regattas on alternative dates, and we thank them for their willingness and flexibility to do so. We also respect each schools individual decision on not attending and are aware of the complexities faced with existing extra-curricular activities already in place.

COVID-19 update: 3 March

As advised by Rowing NZ on 1 March, the 2021 Aon North Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships and 2021 Meridian South Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships were suspended, and will not proceed 5-7 March.

With an aim to provide a positive racing experience to athletes who have been preparing for competition for many months, Rowing NZ have been working alongside School Sport NZ and Regatta Hosts to assess whether each regatta can take place at an alternative time, and considered all possible outcomes regarding the hosting of these two regattas.

In-depth assessments with multiple stakeholders have taken place throughout the last 72 hours. These assessments have determined that it is not possible to host these events prior to the 2021 Aon Maadi Cup due to many factors including but not limited to, venue availability, race official and volunteer availability, the on-going uncertainty surrounding future Alert Level restrictions, and the financial and preparational impacts this uncertainty may place upon secondary school rowing programmes and their athletes.

The 2021 Aon North Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships and 2021 Meridian South Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships remain suspended, and if it is possible for each regatta to proceed, Rowing NZ confirm they will not take place prior to the 2021 Aon Maadi Cup. All schools would be notified immediately if revised regatta dates can be confirmed.

Rowing NZ will continue to work through many variables critical to the successful hosting of each of these events, and encourage all secondary schools to focus on the 2021 Aon Maadi Cup which we look forward to hosting 22 - 27 March at Lake Karapiro.

COVID-19 update: 1 March

On 27 February 2021, the New Zealand Government advised as of 6am on Sunday 28 February, Auckland moved to Alert Level 3 for a period of 7 days. The rest of New Zealand moved to Alert Level 2 for the same period, in place until 6am on Sunday 7 March.

All domestic event organizers must prioritize the continued health and safety of all New Zealanders throughout a period of time where community transmission of COVID-19 remains a risk. Rowing NZ understands all schools are seeking clarity on both the 2021 Aon North Island Secondary Schools Championships and 2021 Meridian South Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships, both scheduled to be hosted 5-7 March.

After consultation with School Sport NZ, the Schools Committee and Regatta Hosts, Rowing NZ and New Zealand Secondary Schools Rowing Association (NZSSRA) confirm that the 2021 Aon North Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships and 2021 Meridian South Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships are suspended, and will not proceed 5-7 March.

The suspended status of both regattas means that each event cannot take place as scheduled, and all organizers are working with School Sport NZ to assess whether the events can take place at an alternative time.

Further information regarding each of these regattas will be provided by Rowing NZ after the New Zealand Government have updated the current Alert Level timeframes.

COVID-19 update: 28 Feb

On 27 February 2021, the New Zealand Government advised as of 6am on Sunday 28 February, Auckland will move to Alert Level 3 for a period of 7 days. The rest of New Zealand moved to Alert Level 2 for the same period, in place until 6am on Sunday 7 March.

This change in Alert Level led to the unfortunate abandonment of the 2021 Aon Junior Regatta (due to finish the finals today at Lake Karapiro). Karapiro Rowing are currently completing departures from the Boat Park at Lake Karapiro so that all participants can return home safely, and we have been assisting with this process.

Rowing NZ understand all schools are seeking clarity on both the 2021 Aon North Island Secondary Schools Championships and 2021 Meridian South Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships, both scheduled to be hosted 5-7 March. Information regarding each of these regattas will be provided by Rowing NZ by 4pm Monday 1 March, 2021.

COVID-19

With the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic situation and the possibility of changing government regulations in NZ we would also like to recommend that schools and supporters consider their bookings and the subsequent cancellation policies or insurance of those bookings carefully. Disruption to or cancellation of these regattas could occur at any time. Also please ensure you stay at home and do not attend the event if you are sick or feeling unwell, and please ensure attention to personal hygiene remains paramount (wash your hands, cough or sneeze into elbow).

Exhibition events approved

The Schools Committee has again approved the inclusion of U17 Pair exhibition events at NISSC (and at Maadi this year). Like last year they are subject to a condition that entrants in these events can't exceed the NZSSRA recommended maximum workload of 3 events. So they are only open to students who are entered in no more than 2 other events.
